Project Description
Before beginning design work, SCNA completed a comprehensive study of the fire department’s needs for the next 20 to 30 years. To meet the design guidelines of the historic district, CNA specified a split-level design (to reduce the building’s height), a roof that imitated those on the surrounding buildings, and a prominent entry canopy with classical order columns.
Inside, the station has four drive-through truck bays, sleep rooms, a training room (directly connected to the kitchen – making it convenient for community use), a storage mezzanine above the apparatus bays, and offices for the administrative staff and storage. The York Fire Department is made up of nine full-time employees and approximately 20 volunteer firefighters. The station has a response area that covers over 64 square miles, and the department works cooperatively with York County to protect surrounding, unincorporated areas.
This project originated from a City decision to move the Fire Department out of its brand new Police Department and into its own facility. The site selected to build the new station upon was located next door to the departments’ old, shared facility and in the heart of the Downtown Historic District.
