Project Description
Sunset beach is a coastal facility located near the North Carolina – South Carolina border. The Sunset Beach fire department headquarters station includes an administrative area, three crew member sleeping rooms, a community room, a dayroom, a lobby and three drive-through apparatus bays with a half-size bay for the Department’s rescue boat. In addition, the facility includes a workshop, laundry facilities and a large storage area built into a mezzanine.
As the Carolina coast is highly susceptible to strong storms, including hurricanes and flooding, Stewart-Cooper-Newell designed the station with hardened walls and structure to withstand 125+ mile-per-hour winds along with a raised site.
Due to the small size of the site, the station was designed with the apparatus bays parallel to the street so that the station would fit well into its surroundings.
