Project Description

Fire Station #5 is the first station built in Bristol, TN in over 55 years. Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects and Bristol-based Thompson & Litton worked side-by-side with the City on this important project.

The focus and design intent was to blend the station with the new mixed-use development adjacent to the site, including a twist of modern materials and a contemporary style. Careful attention to sustainable technologies was included into the final design. And landscaping and plantings followed the community guidelines for appropriate vegetation.

The interior was designed to be warm and comfortable for the firefighters. A trendy dayroom provides living space for crew members with an adjacent kitchen that connects to an inconspicuous outdoor patio. Fire Station #5 has four sleeping quarters and two private bathrooms, and a physical training room with high visibility to the rest of the station. And although Fire Station #5 was designed before the prominence of Hot Zones, it does include a dedicated extractor room that is separated from the living quarters. The EMS disinfecting room is accessed only from the exterior.

Other, more utilitarian components of the station include a decontamination room, a compressor room, an EMS storage room, and a training mezzanine. All with direct access to the apparatus bays. The building is also protected by a diesel generator backup-power system. Fire Station #5 was designed to allow for future expansion of the apparatus bays and includes a vehicle exhaust removal system. This station was built to have a lifetime of seventy-five years.

One of the most significant challenges, involved fitting the three-bay station onto a long, narrow site with zoning setback constraints on all sides. Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects met this challenge, by ensuring that the structure’s direction conformed to the site’s limited buildable area then optimized key design features to support the site conformity for Fire Station #5.
