Project Description
Lewisville is located in a predominately wine and horse region near Winston Salem, NC. The site for this new fire station was selected in a rural area adjacent to a winery. The citizens were concerned that the station’s aesthetic needed to “fit” their area – getting the right look for their building was therefore critical.
The design process began with a community meeting where the local citizens raised their concerns. Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects took a complete program away from that meeting and delivered a design that met the expectations of both the community and the firefighters.
The station includes four drive-through bays, a mezzanine, living spaces, offices, an exercise room, a training room and a wrap-around timber-framed porch. The layout provides efficient access to the apparatus bays from all parts of the building. Built-in training tools include rappelling, stokes baskets, concealed space rescue and ladder work. Daylight floods the apparatus bays, yielding lighting energy savings.
