Project Description

Fire Station 11 is a satellite facility for the Fort Smith Fire Department.  Located in the Chaffee Crossing development, Station 11 allows the department to significantly reduce call times to the rapidly growing neighborhoods and commercial / industrial development in this area.  Chaffee Crossing consists of land formerly part of the historic Fort Chaffee military base, originally constructed during World War II.

The designers took form inspiration from several of the original structures, specifically some of the vehicle maintenance buildings.  The form was enhanced with materials and features referenced in Chaffee Crossings’ Development Guidelines.  Rock veneer was chosen as the predominate material, referencing a historic school house across Massard Road.  Other exterior materials consisted of cementitious siding, stained timber, and standing seam metal roofing.

The station is designed to accommodate an eight person company, with room for six apparatus.  The apparatus bay is a pre-engineered structure consisting of three bays.  A clerestory provides daylighting.  Bay doors were specified as glass to allow the apparatus to be clearly visible from the street.  The residence side of the facility is constructed with load bearing metal stud walls and trusses.  Spray-on foam insulates at the roof deck.  A mechanical mezzanine allows easy access for servicing.  Eight single occupant rooms are provided, with four private bathrooms.  A meeting room equipped with a smart board and seating for up to 30 will serve as an alternate location for department training and community events.  LED lighting was used throughout.

Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects partnered with Fort Smith based Studio 6 Architecture on this exciting project.  This team also assisted the Fort Smith Fire Department with a master plan and design of a burn building for their Fire Training Facility.
