Project Description

Thompson & Litton and Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects teamed together for the planning, design, bidding, and construction of Fire Station #5 in Bristol, Tennessee. Fire Station #5 is a new station manned by four professional personnel. Bristol’s westward expansion/development, (development of The Pinnacle commercial development) coupled with high risk facilities (hospital, 1 – 81) already located in the area, created the need for an additional located fire station for the housing and staging of resources.

Projected highlights / Special features of interest:

  • New construction on challenging site
  • The new single-story facilities, ~10,307 gross SF, three pull through, double loaded, apparatus bay
  • 80′ deep x 20′ wide each apparatus bays will accommodate a 37′ Quint, Ambulance, Reserve Pumper, and Hazmat Trailer
  • Full Building Load Diesel Generator
  • T&L’s Pre-Bid A/E Estimate: $2.726 million
  • Average Bid: $2.502 million
  • Low-Bid: $2.397 million

Detailed Project highlights include the following:

  • New single story facility is approximately 10,307 gross square feet with three pull through, double loaded, apparatus bays, public area, living quarters and support spaces
  • The three 80′ deep x 20′ wide each apparatus bays accommodate a 37′ Quint, Ambulance, Reserve Pumper, and Hazmat Trailer

The apparatus bays have:

  • Sealed concrete floors with stained traffic lines
  • 14×14 overhead sectional steel doors with single row of view panels controls and remotes for vehicles
  • Stop and go LEDs for each overhead door
  • Built-in bay exhaust system
  • Magnagrip exhaust system
  • Electric and air shorelines, cord reels, hose storage racks along bay walls, oil separator; floor drains per bay; exterior and interior hose bibbs, 1.5″ truck fill line, sprinkler riser with bollard protection
  • Turn-out gear lockers along bay walls

Support areas include:

  • Decontamination/laundry room with sinks, floor drains, extractor, gas dryer & PPE rack
  • Compressor room for SCBA & tool compressor
  • EMS and secure medication storage room
  • Bay toilet
  • Tool sharp with 10′ workbench and flammable materials cabinet
  • General storage room

The station public spaces include:

  • Lobby for 2 seated visitors, display wall space, water cooler and an exterior call box intercom for after hours
  • Accessible public restrooms
  • Report room adjacent to lobby via pass window, with built-in casework for 3 workstations, copier and base radio

The station private area for personnel includes:

  • A dayroom for 8 people with TV which is open to a kitchen and dining area with an exterior door to a patio
  • The patio is partially covered and include low walls and gas grill connection
  • Sleeping quarters with 3 double bunk rooms and 1 single bunk room with four lockers
  • The personnel have access to two separate single occupant bathrooms with a toilet, lavatory, shower, bench, and accessories
  • The area includes an exercise room with 4 workout stations and is high visibility in the station
  • The private area is supported by a Residential Laundry/Linen space with Washers and Dryers soak sink, cabinets, and counter-top for sorting, folding, and organization
  • Housekeeping is supported by a Janitor’s Closet with a mop sink & shelving 64 64 in Laundry

The site features include:

  • 50-foot Concrete Aprons at Front and Rear of Apparatus Bay, Heavy duty Asphalt Paving
  • Fire Hydrant at the rear of the station
  • Flap pole with lighting
  • Concrete Filled Steel Bollards at Bay Doors
  • 15 Parking Access
  • Drive-Around Lane / Additional Paved Parking for visited apparatus
