Project Description
This new station for the city of Winston-Salem includes two single-loaded apparatus bays, decontamination facilities, a tool shop and ample EMS supply storage for First Responders. Station 20, is housed within a compact footprint, and also contains a day room, kitchen and dining space, and sleep rooms divided for privacy within the residential wing. The wing also houses the toilet and shower facilities.
The exterior of the facility is designed to blend with the surrounding residential neighborhood. The station has a full building generator, allowing it to maintain operations even during power outages. The on-site fueling station allows the crew to top off their apparatus tanks without the need to leave their emergency response area, which would greatly increase response time. The site accommodates public & staff parking and allows for the bays to be pull through with drive around access on the rear of the station.
The facility is designed to meet the NC State Construction Office’s standard of a 30% reduction in energy cost as compared to the minimum building code requirements. This required more efficient lighting and HVAC along with improvements to the exterior finishes to decrease heat gain/loss inside the building.
Station 20 was designed to be the original prototype fire station for the City of Winston-Salem. Stewart-Cooper-Newell also designed Fire Station 19 – the second fire station designed around the Fire Department’s new prototype.
